What’s New at PlatformQ?
Our partnership team’s goal is to work together with patient advocacy organizations to ensure the education we deliver is meaningful to patients, caregivers, and providers. To that end, we’re excited to share recent developments.
National Organization for Rare Disorders Brings Attention to Need for Rare Disease Education
As you may know, the zebra is an important symbol for the rare disease community, and rare disease education. Our incredible strategic partner the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) spoke eloquently about this in a recent interview with our Vice President of Patient Education Carole Drexel.
“Medical students are taught differential diagnosis, and they are taught [that] when you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. So think of the more common diagnosis this is likely to be,” says NORD Director of Educational Programs Rebecca Aune. “Don’t be worrying about the rare zebras. But 30 million Americans, or approximately one in ten, are living with a rare disease. And they needed their clinician to suspect a zebra.”

Food Allergy Program Draws 700+ Patients & Caregivers
Launched in January, our “Taking Action to Better Manage Food Allergies” program has already drawn 707 learners. Created in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), the program featured a powerful panel discussion, led by specialists from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Public Health Manager for AAFA. To elevate patients’ lived experiences, the program also featured the parent of a child who suffers from food allergies.
Learners gained exposure to key topics, such as:
- Signs and symptoms of food allergies
- Medications, including biologics, to manage allergies
- Emerging treatment options such as immunotherapy
Clearing the Air: Breaking Through Barriers to Asthma Care
As part of our commitment to health equity, we’re always looking for new ways to support communities who have borne the burden of diseases like asthma. Through these efforts, we’re pleased to highlight the novel ways that our wonderful strategic partner AAFA is breaking through barriers to asthma care. This includes an exciting educational program offered in the home, as well as a CME program led by PlatformQ Health and AAFA on providing equitable asthma care.
Tethered Education for nAMD and DME Highly Popular
We launched a new tethered (i.e., joint patient and provider) educational program in partnership with the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF) and DiabetesSisters. The first session, “Understanding How Newer Options for nAMD and DME Can Ease your Injection Needs” educated patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) or diabetic macular edema (DME) and their families and caregivers. Nearly 1,000 learners have already attended the 30-minute program since it launched in January. Featuring ophthalmologists from Cleveland Clinic and Duke University Eye Center and a patient who has diabetes and DME, the session addressed the latest treatments options, including personalized learning intervals; barriers to treatment; and disease risk factors.
Surveys held after the session found more than 69% of attendees are now comfortable speaking with their doctor about concerns regarding nAMD or DME treatment.
